Is the iPad 2 Worth the Upgrade?

I purchased the 64 MB WiFi only iPad 2 from Target. I have decided that I would like the 3G AT&T version so that I have the option of 3G if needed. One iOS 4 feature for the iPhone may help iPad users too. I have added tethering to my iPhone 4 service on AT&T. I can use my iPhone 4 as a personal hotspot for up to 5 devices. We had 3 devices connected through my iPhone 4 via WiFi and we noticed it was slower than when connected at home, but still usable.

The iPad 2 is definitely thinner and lighter. I like the way it feels in my hands with the rounded back. It is 15% lighter and I can feel the difference in my shoulder when I carry the iPad 2 in my purse. Physically, the iPad 2 is better.

iPad 2 Cameras

When the iPad came out without a camera, there was a lot of moaning. Now that the iPad 2 has a camera, I’m wondering why I really need it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad it is there and I do think that it comes in handy for video conferencing, but could I live without it? Yes, it is a bit awkward to take everyday pictures and video because of the size of the iPad.

The camera works well outside in natural light. It doesn’t do well at all in low light. I created an iPad 2 Camera Demo video with photos and videos taken with my iPad 2 and I created the video with iMovie (for iPad.)

iPad 2 Video

I have noticed that video looks much clearer and brighter and with the faster speed, there are no lags when I’m watching video. With the enhanced HD video (720p), I thought it would drain the battery faster, but I do not see that happening.

Overall, I am very pleased the with the new features of the iPad 2. I’m excited to see what new apps are on the horizon that take advantage of all the new features.

iPad 2 SmartCover

The SmartCover is another story. I have a love/hate relationship with my SmartCover. I love the way it magnetically attaches to the side and covers the front of my iPad. The iPad is still very sleek and light and the hint of color on the SmartCover is nice. That’s where it ends. When I try to flip the cover back to stand my iPad upright, I can’t seem to get it right. The magnets clasp onto in the wrong place and the cover won’t stay in the triangle shape to keep my iPad upright.

I haven’t made my final decision whether I will keep the SmartCover or not. But the iPad 2, I’m definitely keeping! If you have just purchased an iPad, be sure to check my 6 Must Have iPad 2 Accessories post and Kris’ 5 Favorite iPad Apps.

What are your thoughts on the iPad 2?

Disclosure: I paid for my iPad myself.

I have to say I’m pretty much in love with every feature of my iPad2 except for the sound quality. Yesterday I tried to watch a Netflix movie on it while waiting in a very quiet doctor’s office and at full strength I could barely hear the movie. They really need to work on that.
